Non-traditional patterned paper for Easy Halloween cards to make

Do you want to see three easy Halloween cards to make using a non conventional patterned paper? If so you are in for a treat, as today I will share with you how to make these cute Halloween cards using any paper you might have.

In these cards I used the Playing with Patterns designer series paper, which has nothing to do with Halloween!!

I shared this on my past videos, but this year’s Halloween paper from Stampin’ Up! was not really my cup of tea. It is beautiful, but I thought it was darker for my taste. I love bright colors with monsters or spooky critters the best, so I decided I was still going to make my Halloween cards using non-Halloween designer series paper for this year.

These is my second set of Halloween cards.. If you have not see the first one you can do so here! – As you can see the first one used the Have a Hoot bundle with the Plaid Tidings designer series paper (DSP). Similar to the designer series paper I am using on these cards, the Plaid Tidings is another great DSP pack for so many occasions and it has way too many colors so the possibilities are endless. 😉

Easy Halloween Cards to make

So where do you start when making your Halloween cards?? you might ask…  Keep reading and I will take you thru the steps

Three Easy Halloween Cards to make

First thing first, we need to decide on the designer series paper you want to use. In my case, as I mentioned before, I wanted to use the Playing with Patterns DSP.

Once you have selected the DSP pack, go thru it and see the patterns you want to use and even more important the colors that you are liking from the pack!

This step for me is the one that sets the tone of my cards most of the times! Let me explain.. If I wanted to get a “Happy” card, I would select colors that are bright and cheerful. Like in this case I wanted to have cheerful Halloween cards.

Below is the color combo that I picked form the Playing with Patterns designer series paper.

Once you have selected the color combination you want to go for, then it is matter to decide which color you want to use as the main color and which one as the highlight. In this case I went with what I saw in the DSP.  Crushed Curry as the main color and then use Night of Navy for highlights. But Honestly I could have gone the other way around and I can guarantee you, the cards would have turned out stunning as well.  So just play with the colors and you will see!

Once I had selected the colors, I went ahead and picked my stamp set, and here is the thing.. before hand I kind of knew I needed to have something I could color in any color. Specially cause I knew I was going to use a non-Halloween theme DSP.

The Flight of Fancy was a great one to use as I could use image of the witch and change the colors of the outfit to any color combination I needed.

So it made it the perfect image to use!

TIP – Always have in mind what you want to do.. In my case I knew I needed an image I could customize so and image I can color, would be ideal, specially cause I was going to use a paper pack that is not Halloween themed!.

Because I was going to color her using blends, I stamped the image with the Memento ink. that way the alcohol markers would not pick up any of the black ink.

To highlight the witch’s outfit I added wink of stella to her dress and her hat, which adds a glimmer look that you will love!! so try it out!

And finally, you can just play with the layout of the card using the cardstock, DSP and images you selected. One advice here is to always use one embellishment for your card, specially one that coordinates with it. In my case I used ribbon! and I honestly think, it made the card pop!

This first card was very basic and easy to follow, but I knew for next two I wanted to try using the same image, and colors but step it up with the folds so below you will see both of the fun folds I used.

If you want to learn how to make these fun folds, make sure you watch the video tutorial below.. here is where I would show the step by step as well as the measurements of how to make all these cards.
